In 1977, I donned the uniform of the Chicago Police Department and served faithfully for thirty years, plus. Entering the police academy meant forfeiting a job that paid 50 thousand dollar a year with great benefits and a future. I chose the police department because of its pension and security. Now both of those admirable attributes are in jeopardy.
I would not accept the Chicago police job now-a-days for any amount of money.
In 2021, 78 Chicago Police Officers were shot or shot at. That number is unbelievable. Every 4 ½ days, a Chicago Police Officer is being shot at. That’s not counting those officers being assaulted on a daily basis. AND, the police are under constant attack from the leftwing Politician’s, preachers, media, city council and the mayor of the city of Chicago.
Chicago has changed since the days of Mayor Jane Byrne.
As of this writing 841 total homicides were committed in Chicago in 2021. 719 persons were shot and killed with another 4,533 people shot that survived. Every two hours a person is shot and every 10 hours a person is killed in the windy city.
Police were responsible for 13 offenders shot with 9 being shot and killed in the entire time in 2021. Out of over 4500 people shot in Chicago, the police shot 22 of them. But the police are the targets of the naive progressive left as well as the George Soros funded States Attorney.
A 13-year-old tatted gang member was shot and killed by a police officer after he was pursued from a scene of a shooting, ran with a gun in his hand, turned toward the officers with his arm rapidly rising and was shot. The city attempted to criminally indict the officer.
An officer was fending off three offenders while standing his ground protecting his partner who was wrestling with an offender attempting to handcuff him. When the offender got the better of the officer and was on top of him trying to pull the gun from the holster, the standing officer turned quickly and kicked him in the head allowing his partner to gain control while still fending off three attackers. This officer was given a three-month suspension for kicking an offender in the head. He would have been legally justified in shooting and killing him.
An officer was presented to the Grand Jury for shooting at a moving stolen car as the fleeing offender was attempting to run down the officer’s partner.
These are just a few of the degenerative attacks of Chicago Police by the mayor’s office, the police superintendent’s office as well as the primary antagonist, the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office.
There is not a modicum of common sense. This is an all-out war on police officers, NOT the police department. The phony politically appointed leaders sit comfortably in their offices and enjoy all the luxuries afforded pretentious royalty. Their indignation at the rule of law is self-destructive and eventually suicide of a once great police department.
The Chicago police Department, for the first time is history, has a hiring problem, coupled with a retention problem. Where a police test would once draw a crowd of 6,000 or 7,000 applicants, now draws a few hundred with less than half that number passing and less than half that number showing up for the final process.
AND, the city calls via the phone on test days to ensure the applicant shows up. Classes of hundreds of cadets are now replaced with 25 to fifty recruits even with drug tests being virtually ignored and theft records and gang affiliations being allowed. In the name of equity and police reform, the city of Chicago is scraping the bottom of the societal barrel for police recruits.
Chicago police resignations have increased by 18% while retirements are up 45%. Thirty years is the goal for maximum retirement benefits. Officers are leaving with less than twenty years choosing to withdraw their pension investments instead of retirement. In my day, officers routinely retired with 30 and 35 years on. Today officers are choosing retirement with 22, 24 years, bare minimum benefits. Unheard of twenty years ago.
Chicago police are being welcomed into neighboring police departments with open arms. Different jurisdictions are openly recruiting Chicago Police Officers because they are highly trained and have the advanced education needed in such a confusing profession.
But back in the city of Chicago the driving forces continuously preach “If you’re a cop, you’re a racist. If you’re a cop, we’re going to sue you. If you’re a cop you’re probably violating our constitutional rights, right and left. If you’re a cop, all you do is shoot people.” Daily Herald, December 31st, 2021.
Who the hell in their right mind would put that badge on in the city of Chicago? That once honorable badge is now a target, figuratively and literally.
To all my brothers and sisters in blue, lock and load and protect each other. And as always, stay safe.
“Above all, it’s about going home at the end of the shift … “
We couldn’t agree more.
